Dutch Elm Disease

Dutch Elm Disease (DED) first appeared in Europe in the early 1900’s. The spread of DED to the US is thought to have happened through the international timber trade.

Dutch Elm Disease causes wilt and death in all species of Elm trees native to the US. The disease is spread by Elm bark beetles during feeding. If the disease is caught early enough it is treatable.
